Nico Athene works in a darker register ~ body, persona, ritual and ecological intimacy. Less portfolio grid, more living archive.

Nico is a Cape Town-born trans-disciplinary artist whose expanded performance practice moves between photography, multimedia collage, video, installation and sculpture, often circling identity, ecology and intimacy beyond capitalism.

She holds an MFA from the University of the Witwatersrand, a Master’s in Public Health from the University of Edinburgh and a BA in Social Anthropology from UCT. Her work has shown at the Pretoria Art Museum, Stevenson, Kalashnikovv, the AVA, the Bag Factory and Theatre Arts, with commissions for the ICA, the Spier Light Art Festival, the National Arts Festival and Brett Bailey’s Constellations.
